Ghanaians are yet to come to terms with the sad news on the death of its former president, His Excellency, Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings who died at age 73.
He died Thursday morning 12th November 2020 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra. Former president, J. J. Rawlings had been on admission since Sunday at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital, Cardiothoracic Centre and was transferred to the intensive care unit Wednesday 11th November 2020.
The deceased initially came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d’état in 1979 , led a military junta until 1992,and served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
In 1992, Rawlings resigned from the military, founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and became the first President of the Fourth Republic. He was re-elected in 1996 for four more years. After two terms in office accordance with his constitutional mandate, his term in office ended in 2001
Tributes all over the world are pouring out in remembrance of the great leader who ruled Ghana from 1981 to 2001 and also a brief period in 1979.
In memory of Flt.Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has declared seven days of National Mourning from friday 13th November,2020 to Friday, 20th November,2020.
