The president of the American bishops, José Gómez, congratulated Joe Biden on behalf of the episcopal conference. The Archbishop of Los Angeles emphasizes that “after John F. Kennedy, Joe Biden is the second president of the Catholic religion”.
In the statement he also reminds the country’s Catholics that they should “be peacemakers, promote brotherhood and mutual trust, and pray for a renewed spirit of true patriotism.”
It says that democracy “requires respecting the free expression of opinions and treating each other with charity and civility, even when we deeply disagree in debates on legislative or political issues.”
The bishops also congratulate Senator Kamala Harris, the first woman to serve as the vice president of the United States.
The declaration concludes by asking the Virgin Mary to help the nation “to work together to fulfill the precious vision of the missionaries and the founders of America, a nation under God, where the sanctity of all human life is defended and the freedom of conscience and religion ”.
