Greater Love

We are all very familiar with the first sentence of today’s gospel reading. It may have been your favourite quotation in the whole of scripture since you were little; but today, I invite you to read it slowly and repeatedly, allowing it to sink into every fiber of your being. “God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. ”

I see the ‘LOVE factor’ as the basis of God’s actions and this love knows no bounds, is selfless, unconditional and super-abundant. Because God does everything out of love, everything He does is good and benefits us – just like the loving sacrifice of His only Son gained our redemption. However, we, to whom this great love is shown, tend to do the exact opposite- we’re filled with hatred, backbiting, animosity and jealousy to mention a few.

Today, from our first reading, we see one of the forces that wants to hinder the ‘new life’ and ‘new teachings’ of love and brotherliness. Filled with JEALOUSY, we are told they arrested the apostles. Jealousy was the force that was driving the high priest and the party of the Sadducees to prevent the growth of the new life and new teachings in Christ. All they cared about was themselves and their status in society, and cared less about the people who could be saved.

There are two forms of jealousy: 1. Protective or defensive of one’s position or status; they will destroy anything or anyone that poses a challenge.
2. Desirous or wanting others’ achievement or possession so becomes bitter and would even wish to be in their position. Both are evil, but the second one is more deadly. Let’s pray to God to rid our hearts of jealousy because all can fall prey to it; it is deadly and doesn’t bring progress.

Let’s continue to plead God’s mercy on our nation and the world so that just as “at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them (the disciples) out,” the Lord Himself will open the doors of the world and will sweep out the pandemic from our land and open the doors of His cure and flood our world with His healing rays.
Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34; Jn. 3:16-21

KEEPING YOU ALL IN PRAYERS. GOD BLESS YOU AND PLEASE BE SAFE.
